What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces use metal or ceramic brackets that are attached directly to the tooth and connected with a metal wire during the treatment to gradually move and straighten the teeth. With braces fixed in place, orthodontists need to make frequent adjustments so that the teeth move according to plan for optimal results.

What are braces made up of?

Fixed appliances have brackets and bands temporarily stuck to the teeth for the duration of treatment. A flexible wire joins all the brackets and allows the teeth to be moved gently and accurately into their position. It is not possible for the patient to take the appliance out and so it is called a fixed appliance.

There are two types of fixed braces which can be used to straighten your teeth, they both work in the same way but are made of different materials. We offer metal or ceramic braces. Ceramic brackets are tooth coloured or translucent. They are less conspicuous than metal brackets and therefore often favoured by adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed braces are orthodontic appliances used to correct misaligned or crooked teeth. They consist of brackets that are bonded to the teeth and connected by arch wires, which are adjusted periodically to guide the teeth into their correct positions.

Fixed braces apply gentle and continuous pressure on the teeth, encouraging them to shift gradually into their desired alignment. The archwires are adjusted by your orthodontist at regular visits to ensure steady progress throughout the treatment.

Fixed braces are effective in addressing a wide range of dental issues, including overcrowded teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, overjets, crossbites, and other misalignment problems.

You may experience some discomfort or soreness when the braces are first applied or after adjustments. This is normal as your teeth adjust to the pressure. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate any discomfort.

The duration of treatment with fixed braces varies based on the severity of your orthodontic issues. On average, treatment can last anywhere from 18-24 months. Your orthodontist will provide a more accurate estimate after evaluating your specific case.

While wearing fixed braces, you should avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods that may damage the brackets or wires. It’s best to stick to soft and non-sticky foods during the treatment period.

Oral hygiene is crucial during your treatment with fixed braces. Brush your teeth after every meal or snack, and use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to clean between the teeth and around the brackets and wires.

You can still participate in sports and play musical instruments while wearing fixed braces. However, it’s advisable to wear a mouthguard during some physical activities to protect your braces and mouth.

It’s best to avoid habits like nail-biting, chewing on pens or ice, and opening packaging with your teeth, as these activities can damage your braces.

After your fixed braces are removed, your orthodontist will provide you with a retainer to help maintain the alignment of your newly straightened teeth.

BENEFITS OF ORTHODONTICS

Is orthodontic treatment right for me?

Not everyone is born with perfectly straight teeth or jaws that align correctly. If your teeth are misaligned and if the appearance of your teeth is causing problems with self-esteem, then you can benefit from fixed braces or other types of orthodontic treatment.

An attractive smile can increase confidence, self-esteem, and overall appearance. Orthodontic treatment can also provide lifelong oral health because teeth are easier to clean and are less prone to dental disease and damage.

The good news is that everyone CAN have perfect teeth by using customised orthodontic treatment from Smile Orthodontics.
