Why do I need retainers and how important is it to wear it?

Now that your teeth are straight, if you do not wear your retainer, your teeth are likely to drift towards their original positions. Everyone’s teeth do move throughout life, so the only way to ensure your teeth remain straight is to wear your retainer indefinitely.

Yes, retainers are typically designed to be removable for ease of cleaning and maintenance. However, it’s crucial to follow your orthodontist’s instructions regarding when and how long to wear your retainer.

To take care of your retainer, you should:

  • Remove it before eating or drinking (except for cold plain water) to prevent damage.
  • Clean it regularly using a soft toothbrush and cold water.
  • Store it in its case when not in use to prevent loss or damage. If the retainer is lost or broken and needs replacing there is a charge.

Initially, wearing a retainer may cause slight discomfort or pressure, but this is normal as your teeth adjust to their new positions. However, discomfort should subside over time.

Yes, regular dental check-ups are essential even after your orthodontic treatment is complete. Your dentist or orthodontist will monitor the progress of your teeth and the condition of your retainer.
